Amid nationwide scrutiny following the order to remove flags from rigs, the Arlington Fire District is hoping for a compromise.
Firefighters were ordered by the Board of Fire Commissioners to remove the large American flags from all apparatus.
Fire Chief Tory Gallante and two firefighters are set to meet with commissioners Thursday afternoon to discuss a possible compromise, according to The Poughkeepsie Journal.
Arlington Fire Commissioner Chairman Jim Beretta said the board majority feel the flags are a "liability during normal operations for our people and other motorists," and that the board had not been consulted before the flags were mounted.
On Wednesday, Beretta told reporters he reached out to Gallante and offered to sit down for a discussion with him "and whomever he wants to pull together ... to have an initial conversation on how we might come to a compromise, some solution."
Gallante said he and the department have been contacted by reporters from around the country.
