CA Firefighters Corralling Clayton Fire

If conditions continue, it could be contained by Sunday.

Firefighters made progress overnight in corralling Lake County’s Clayton fire, with containment now estimated at 65 percent, Cal Fire reported Friday morning.

The number of fire personnel battling the blaze has dropped to 1,742 from more than 2,100 on Thursday morning.

The fire, which authorities say was deliberately set last Saturday, has burned nearly 4,000 acres and destroyed 300 structures, including 190 single-family homes and eight commercial structures in and around Lower Lake.

The fire is the largest of a dozen fires that Clearlake resident Damin Pashik is accused of setting over the past year. Pashik, 40, was arrested Monday and charged in court Wednesday with starting a dozen fires and attempting to start a 13th.

Inspection teams continue to survey damage from the fire. Officials estimate that by Sunday night firefighters will reach full containment of the blaze.
