A toddler’s birthday party in Billerica took a tragic turn last night when a 2?1/2-year-old girl tripped and fell into an outdoor fire pit and suffered such severe burns that she had to be rushed by helicopter to a Boston hospital, police said.

Billerica police Deputy Chief Roy Frost told the Herald officers responded to a home on Bridle Road at 6 p.m. and found no evidence of drugs, alcohol or foul play contributing to the child’s injuries — which were non-life-threatening.

“Everything appeared to be responsible people who are just dealing with an accident,” Frost said. “Nothing at the scene raised concerns.”

Paramedics responding to the call found the young girl’s burns to be so severe that they ordered an emergency MedFlight to transport the toddler to a Hub hospital for treatment.
