Former VT Firefighter Says He Set Fire to Move from Community

Nov. 1, 2016
The former East Randolph firefighter said he set the fire so he could move and get a better education for his son.

A former East Randolph firefighter told police he set fire to his home so he could move out of state to get his son a better education.

Jason Gregoire, 30, was charged with Reckless Endangerment in connection with the Sept. 4 fire on Route 66, according to MyChamplainValley.com.

He volunteered with the department for eight years and is no longer a member of the department.

"The Gregoires advised they were frustrated with the school system and what they felt was a lack of services and felt they were left with no other alternatives but to destroy the house and move away," Vermont State Patrol Detective Sgt. Larry Smith said in a statement.

Gregoire told officials he could get better services for his autistic son in New York.

No insurance claim was filed, according to investigators and nobody was injured.
