An Atlanta man faces two felonies after being accused of trying to set a Brookhaven police car ablaze over the weekend.
Spencer Vaughn Klene, 28, was arrested Sunday after being caught in the act at a parking deck at Town Brookhaven off Peachtree Road, police said in a Facebook post. The mixed-use shopping mall features restaurants, shops and 950 luxury apartments.
An off-duty officer was walking through the parking deck about 9 a.m. when he spotted Klene pulling on the door handle of the marked patrol car, the post said. Klene is accused of holding a five-gallon gasoline canister, paper towels and a lighter.
The off-duty officer detained Klene until on-duty officers arrived, the post said.
He was charged with criminal attempt to commit arson and criminal attempt to commit interference with government property, which are both felonies. In addition, he faces counts of public drunkenness and loitering and prowling, jail records show.
Klene was booked into the DeKalb County jail, where he remained Monday without bond.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Brookhaven police at 404-637-0600.
