Four people, including three children, were killed in a house fire in Lebanon on Sunday.
Mayor Sherry Capello said in a media update late Sunday afternoon that the four — ages 73, 17, 4, and 1 — were among 10 people in the home on the 800 block of Church Street when the fire broke.
Several of them were guests visiting for a birthday celebration, she said.
In addition to those who died, one remains in critical condition, and one is in stable condition. The remaining four occupants escaped with minor injuries, she said.
No names have been released.
The Lebanon Fire Department was dispatched at 8:43 a.m. and arrived on scene within two minutes. They found the first and second floors of the residence were fully engulfed, with flames visible from the windows, she said.
Firefighters were immediately advised that individuals were trapped inside the building. A second alarm was immediately requested, and additional apparatus and volunteers responded from neighboring companies.
Fire crews initially worked to knock down the flames, which allowed them to find and rescue three individuals, who were transported to WellSpan/Good Samaritan Hospital.
Conditions within the structure then deteriorated, forcing crews to withdraw and continue suppression efforts from the exterior. Once conditions stabilized, firefighters re-entered the building and recovered two additional victims.
The fire originated from an electrical outlet in the first-floor living room and has been ruled accidental in nature, she said.
In her note, Capello thanked the Lebanon Fire Department for its swift and professional response, as well as the Lebanon City Police, Lebanon City Fire Police, and Lebanon City Public Safety Inspectors for their assistance.
Others who she cited as arriving to help fight the fire included:
- Neversink Fire Co.
- South Lebanon Fire Dept.
- Neptune Fire Co. (Richland)
- Annville-Cleona Fire Dept.
- Myerstown (Keystone Hook & Ladder)
- Glenn Lebanon Fire Co.
- Community Fire Co. of Cornwall
- Bellegrove Fire Co. (Rehab)
- Salvation Army (Rehab)
- First Aid & Safety Patrol
- Lebanon City Fire Police
- Fire Police from Neversink & North Lebanon

“The City of Lebanon is fortunate to have such a courageous and dedicated community of first responders-neighbors who come together without hesitation in moments of greatest need to protect lives and property,” she said.
