A mother was driving 121 mph seconds before a crash that killed her 1-year-old son over the weekend, according to Las Vegas police.
The accident happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. Sunday as Lauren Prescia, 24, and her son, Royce Jones, were traveling at a high rate of speed, KVVU-TV reports. Their Hyundai Sonata then collided with a Nissan Sentra before hitting a sign that sheared the right side of the car.
The boy, who was in a forward-facing car seat, was thrown from the Sonata and pronounced dead at the scene. Prescia and the driver of the Sentra suffered minor injuries.
Photos from the scene by the Las Vegas Fire Rescue show debris scattered around the crash site. A small fire also was burning in the roadway.
According to the arrest report, officers observed that Prescia smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes at the scene, KVVU added. Investigators also retrieved data from her car that showed she was traveling 121 mph just 2.5 seconds before the accident.
Prescia was charged with DUI resulting in death, felony reckless driving and abuse and neglect or endangerment of a child.
