Stairwell Collapse Injures Three ME Firefighters, Police Officer

Nov. 13, 2020
Yarmouth firefighters and a police officer were removing a patient experiencing a medical emergency from a third-story apartment when an outside stairwell collapsed.

A stairwell collapse injured three Maine firefighters and a police officer as they were treating a patient during a call early Friday.

Yarmouth firefighters responded to medical emergency call at a third-story apartment at around 5:30 a.m., according to the police department. As four firefighters and a police officer were taking the patient from the apartment, an outside stairwell collapsed.

Two firefighters and the police officer were taken to hospitals in Portland with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, the Portland Press Herald reports. The patient who initiated the original call was not injured in the collapse, and a third firefighter waived treatment at the hospital.

“Right now we’re taking care of our first responders and making sure they’re OK,”  Fire Chief Michal Robitaille told the Press Herald.
