A Georgia 9-1-1 dispatch center and several ambulances were destroyed when a fire tore through the facility over the weekend.
The fire broke out at the Jeff Davis County 9-1-1 Center in Hazlehurst on Saturday night, Telfair County Sheriff Slim Davidson said in an online update. Flames gutted the center, knocking out 9-1-1 and ambulance service.
"In the past few hours, our fire and rescue team, sheriff's office, and others came to the scene to support each other and stop the fire," County Administrator Oakley G. Perry stated in a social media post. "All county ambulances are currently out of commission and 911 is down, but thanks to our friends in Appling, Bacon, and Coffee Counties, 911 calls are being answered and ambulances are available to make calls."
On Sunday, Gov. Brian Kemp visited the center to inspect the damage the fire had caused. He thanked officials in nearby counties for stepping up to help, the governor stated in social media posts.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
