Front Line Medical Technologies’ New Bleeding Control Device Increases Trauma Patients’ Chances of Survival

Sept. 14, 2021
The COBRA-OS™ device is the smallest REBOA device on the market, allowing front-line medical professionals to buy time to get bleeding patients to definitive care settings.

LONDON, Ontario – Sept. 10, 2021 – Excessive blood loss is one of the leading causes of death in trauma patients, and trauma is the fourth leading cause of death overall for all ages. That’s where Front Line Medical Technologies, a medical device company lowering the barriers to bleeding control and resuscitation worldwide, comes in. Front Line is hoping to change the way first responders and front-line medical professionals manage these traumatic injuries with the creation of the COBRA-OS™, the world’s smallest REBOA device to control bleeding.

The COBRA-OS™ is the first 4 French REBOA (Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta) device and it is the smallest on the market. It is an innovative, easy-to-use aortic occlusion device with an extremely low profile for temporary hemorrhage control and resuscitation. REBOA devices are used in emergency situations, like unstable pelvic fractures, to prevent excessive blood loss and bridge patients to the operating room. While most REBOA procedures take about 10 minutes, the COBRA-OS™ has taken just over a minute in studies, which could be the difference between life and death.

Designed by practicing vascular surgeon, Dr. Adam Power, and biomedical engineer, Dr. Asha Parekh, the COBRA-OS™ is small in design but huge in impact. It will allow front-line medical professionals to treat non-compressible torso trauma, such as gun shots or stab wounds to the chest and abdomen, more minimally invasively without the need to open a patient’s chest and clamp their aorta (resuscitative thoracotomy). In cities with high rates of gun violence, including Chicago, which has seen more than 3,100 shootings in 2021, the importance of the COBRA-OS™ is clear. More than 532 gunshot victims have died this year, and the COBRA-OS™ may have helped some of these patients survive.

The COBRA-OS™ can be used in other situations as well, including postpartum and gastrointestinal hemorrhage and is being investigated for nontraumatic cardiac arrest to increase ROSC (Return Of Spontaneous Circulation) rates.

The COBRA-OS™ received FDA clearance and Health Canada approval earlier this year. For more information about Front Line Medical Technologies and to stay updated on the COBRA-OS™, please visit https://frontlinemedtech.com/.
