San Antonio is the first large city to begin carrying whole blood inside ambulances and response units, allowing fire department paramedics to perform blood transfusions after trauma events such as shootings or serious vehicle wrecks.

Patients suffering traumatic injuries and losing blood fast now have a much better chance of surviving, and medics says it's a game changer.
