A police officer was among 10 people killed in a shooting at a Colorado grocery store Monday.
Authorities responded to King Soopers in Boulder shortly before 3 p.m., KKTV-TV reports. In an online update, police told residents to avoid the area of the store, and a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deployed a SWAT unit to the location.
A witness leaving the grocery store told KDVR-TV that a man carrying what appeared to be an AR-15-style weapon and wearing tactical gear was seen in the parking lot. After going back inside to warn others, the witness then fled through the back and ran to a fire station, which was closed.
According to the Boulder Daily Camera, police took a suspect into custody, and that was the only person taken to the hospital. Police said there was no danger to the public.
At a press conference, Boulder police Cmdr. Kerry Yamaguchi said multiple people were killed in the attack. Police at a later press conference said 10 people had died in the attack, including Boulder police Officer Eric Talley.
Boulder police Chief Maris Herold called the actions of Talley and the other officers who responded to the incident “heroic.”
“My heart goes out to the victims of this incident and I’m grateful for the police officers that responded, and I am so sorry about the loss of Officer Talley,” she said.
Yamaguchi said police responded quickly to 9-1-1 calls about the incident and were able to enter the store swiftly.
"Without that quick response, we don't know if there would have been more loss of life," he said during the press conference.
Following the shooting, police created a procession for the fallen officer.
Yamaguchi said authorities are "very early in the investigation."
