Multiple people were injured Wednesday in a chemical explosion at a dairy plant in Kentucky, according to the London Fire Department.

The explosion happened just after 7 a.m. at the Borden Dairy Plant on West Highway 80 in London. The London-Laurel County Economic Development Authority said four people were injured.

The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, according to the fire department.

The chemical involved in the explosion was a type of acid sanitizer called Hyperflex. The fire department said the chemical contained phosphoric acid and nitric acid, and it is corrosive and can cause significant health effects with direct contact.

When fire officials arrived at the plant, they quickly contained the scene and began decontamination procedures. The fire department said it also conducted decontamination procedures at the hospital.

Fire officials have since cleared the scene at the plant, but the cause of the explosion remains under investigation. The fire department said it worked with partner agencies to contain the hazard, protect the public and provide medical support.

The plant is one of four milk plants owned by Borden, which is headquartered in Dallas. The company’s website says it has about 1,700 employees and makes more than 35 dairy products at its plants.
