A man died Monday after he was crushed by a burial vault at a Dallas funeral home, fire officials say.

Dallas Fire-Rescue was dispatched shortly after 2 p.m. to the Restland Funeral Home at 13005 Greenville Ave., where crews found a man pinned from the waist down by a burial vault.

Burial vaults are protective containers used to enclose caskets and coffins. They’re most commonly made of concrete, but can also be made of plastic or steel.

According to Jason Evans, a department spokesman, the first arriving firetruck was able to lift the vault with a combination of spreaders, typically used to open vehicles in accidents, and air bags.

The man, who was not publicly identified, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries to his lower body.

In an update shortly after 5 p.m., Evans reported the man had died.

No additional information was immediately available.
