Fire-based EMS Crews Now Responding in South Berwick, ME

The eight new South Berwick firefighter/paramedics and EMTs are replacing York Ambulance crews who've responded for the past 14 years.

Something changed Sunday morning in South Berwick.

An engine and an ambulance crew responded to a smoke alarm after the resident left something in a toaster a tad too long.

The ambulance was staffed by South Berwick firefighter/EMTs not a team from a private EMS agency, WMWT reported.

Just over a year ago, voters approved funding to establish a fire-based EMS program. And, eight new firefighter/EMTs and paramedics hit the street a month earlier than scheduled.

"We truly appreciate all of the support, and I can assure you, we won’t let you down," fire officers wrote on Sunday.

Heretofore, the department responded to medical incidents with EMTs in a non-transport unit.
