Red Bank firefighters rescued a police officer who became trapped in an apartment fire Tuesday night, according to The Asbury Park Press.

Two police officers rushed into the Metropolitan Apartments shortly after 7 p.m. to search for residents before fire crews arrived on the scene.

They encountered thick smoke and one of the officers was able to make it out, but the other was trapped after a portion of the ceiling collapsed on him.

Firefighters raised a ladder to the second-story window and the officer was able to escape.

Officials said the cause of the fire was a short in an electrical wire in a hallway ceiling.
