ALTOONA, Iowa --
Firefighters put out a fire at an Altoona apartment complex Tuesday morning.
Crews were called to the Altoona Terrace Apartments at 1104 4th St. SW around 9:30 a.m. Witnesses said residents evacuated when heavy smoke filled the building.
Firefighters said the fire started in a second floor apartment of the 24-unit building and spread from there.
"The floor gave way in the third floor. That apartment, we can't get in there and we have to fight it from the second floor," said Altoona Fire Chief Jerry Whetstone.
Firefighters from Altoona and Pleasant Hill were called to the scene.
No serious injuries have been reported. The cause remains under investigation.
The American Red Cross has set up an evacuation center for all residents involved in the fire. The center is located at the Altoona Baptist Church at 803 3rd Avenue in Altoona.
Red Cross disaster workers were on the scene Tuesday morning to help residents.
