FRANKLIN, Mass. --

Five children and their caretaker safely escaped a two-alarm home day care blaze in Franklin on Tuesday.

The fire broke out at about 3 p.m. Tuesday in the attic of the 129 Conlyn Ave. home. A motorist on Interstate 495 saw flames coming from the home and called the fire department, the Milford Daily News reported.

"When I saw flames, I immediately grabbed the kids and got out," caretaker Jeanne Downey told the paper.

The five children, ranging from 3 1/2 months to 5 years old, were taken to a neighbor's yard until their parents arrived.

Fire officials said the blaze was contained to the attic and was extinguished by 3:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
