ROYAL PALM BEACH, Fla. --

A Royal Palm Beach couple escaped their burning home early Thursday morning, just one day after they were in a car accident.

Eric Ott and his live-in girlfriend woke up to smoke inside their house at about 3:30 a.m.

Ott said he used an ironing board to smash through their bedroom window to escape.

It was the only way I could figure out how to get out, Ott said. I was going to open the door and it was hot. I didnt know if flames were going to come shooting in or what and I was scared. That was, like, my last choice.

Ott said he was able to save their dog and a few valuables.

But talk about bad luck. Ott said the couple was in a car accident Wednesday.

The cause of the blaze was not known, but firefighters said it did not appear to be suspicious.
