BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. --
Firefighters from several Brevard County departments were on the scene Saturday afternoon as a blaze burned through a mansion on South Tropical Trail.
The Brevard County Sheriff's Office advised that Tropical Trail was closed in both directions at the Pineda Causeway intersection because of the fire.
According to witnesses at the scene the fire was burning out of control and had caused heavy damage to the home, located on the Banana River at the Pineda Causeway, near Merritt Island.
A Brevard County Fire Department spokesman described the structure as an 8000 square foot home and confirmed that a lightning strike was the likely cause of the fire, which broke out shortly after noon.
Two people were inside the structure at the time, and were evacuated safely by firefighters.
