Firefighters May Be Called Back in Pennsylvania

Two firefighters in York were laid off last month because of budget cuts.

A York City Council member says she has found a way to free more money to pay city firefighters.

Two firefighters were laid off last month because of budget cuts. Shortly after that the York Volunteer Firemen's Relief Association sent Mayor John Brenner a letter saying the association had cut off funding in the city because of the layoffs.

City Council Member Vickie Washington said she wants to transfer funds from a program that's not being used to give the city an extra $75,000.

"I would shut down a program, put the money into the economic development program that's now being funded by the general fund, and then free up that money for the fire department," Washington said.

The council will discuss Washington's proposal next month.
