DAYTON, Ohio --

A former Dayton firefigher died after smoke and flames broke out in his home Wednesday evening.

The Montgomery County Coroner's Office has identified the victim as Richard L. Cory, 83.

Firefighters said neighbors saw the smoke coming from the house on the 3100 block of Wellington Drive in Dayton.

Several people grabbed fire extinguishers and tried to save the man, but they could not get inside, firefighters said.

Firefighters managed to get the man out of the house but were not able to revive him, fire crews said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials do not believe it is suspicious. Investigators said they believe the cause may be accidental.

Fire officials said they are looking for Cory's personnel file; they believe he retired in the 1970s.
