Washington, D.C. -- During National Home Safety Month, the Home Safety Council (HSC) is holding its inaugural Salute to Home Safety Awards Dinner on June 30, 2005 at the Washington Hilton and Towers. This event will recognize corporations, congressional leaders and individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the area of home safety on both local and national levels.

Throughout the evening, the Home Safety Council will be honoring recipients of five different awards. The Salute to Home Safety Excellence Award acknowledges companies which strive to educate the public and/or their employees about home safety tips, prevention and messaging. The Commendation Seal for Product Innovation for Consumer Safety was established in 2004 to recognize manufacturers' outstanding contributions for product innovations that enhance consumer safety. Other awards to be given to recognize individual contributions to home safety are the Safety All Star Award, the Congressional Award and the Founder's Award.

The keynote address will be given by home maintenance experts Stephanie Glakas-Tenet and Julie Sussman, co-authors of the 2002 popular book Dare to Repair. Ms. Glakas-Tenet and Ms. Sussman will share key insights into home care that could help increase safety in and around the home. Dare to Repair is an innovative and user-friendly home repair resource for women and has been featured on The New York Times, The Washington Post, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon best seller lists. Julie Sussman's career has included working for two United States Congressmen. Stephanie Glakas-Tenet's professional experiences have included advocacy, management, and fund-raising in the fields of government service, healthcare, and higher education. They are currently working on a sequel entitled, Dare to Repair Your Car.

This year's honorees include individuals and leading manufacturers from a variety of industries and fields who have paved the way for greater home safety through implementation of proactive education programs and pioneering product development.
