CEDAR LAKE, Ind. (AP) -- Two firefighters were injured in a fire that destroyed a northwestern Indiana apartment building.
Twelve families were forced from the Oaks Apartments in Cedar Lake, about 15 miles south of Gary, Thursday evening.
When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting 20 feet through the roof of the three-story building, Deputy Fire Chief Todd Wilkening said.
One firefighter was injured when debris fell on his head and another suffered smoke inhalation, Wilkening said. A message was left at the Fire Department on Friday seeking information on their conditions.
All the residents were safely evacuated from the building. Seven area fire departments responded to the scene.
The cause of the fire was no immediately determined.
