Firefighters are cleaning up after a four-alarm fire gutted several apartments in San Jose, displacing 53 residents.
The San Jose Fire Department reports that a four-alarm fire this morning, which displaced 53 residents, is now under control.

According to Capt. Allison Cabral, the blaze was first reported at 10:41 p.m. Tuesday at the Pinewood Terrace Apartments, located at 2620 Alvin Ave.

The fire was declared under control at 3:17 a.m. It "completely gutted" 10 apartments Cabral said, and damaged an additional 18 units. Cabral estimates that approximately $3 million in damages occurred.

According to Cabral, only three of the displaced residents needed Red Cross assistance, with the other residents staying with family or friends.

Three injuries were reported, with one victim suffering from smoke inhalation, and both a resident and fireman suffering from back injuries.

Both victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Approximately 70 firefighters responded to the scene, Cabral said, with assistance from the Milpitas and Santa Clara fire departments.

Cabral reports that 40 firefighters are still on the scene to watch the burning embers and help with the aftermath.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
