Five people were injured, none of them students, in a three-vehicle crash involving a school bus early Tuesday in Felton.
State police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Oldham said Tracy Scott, 32, of Dover, was driving the 1995 International school bus south on U.S. 13 in the right lane about 6:30 a.m. She stopped in the right lane to pick up students of Academy of Dover Charter School.
A 1984 Chevrolet Cavalier operated by Tracy James, 40, of Norfolk, Va., was behind the bus in the right lane. Oldham said James slid to a stop inches away from the rear of the bus. But a 2000 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Clyde Shinsky, 51, of Dover, traveling behind James, struck the rear of the Cavalier, pushing it beneath the bus.
Police are investigating whether Scott activated the emergency lights before the crash.
Scott was treated at Kent General Hospital for minor injuries. The two children on the bus were not injured and were released to the custody of their parents.
James was admitted to Kent General Hospital with neck strain, cuts and bruises. Front-seat passenger Phillip James, 45, was flown to Christiana Hospital, where he was admitted with cuts and bruises.
A third occupant in the car, Athena Steverson, 21, also was flown to the hospital and admitted with a dislocated hip, scrapes and bruises. Oldham said a 5-year-old child in the car was treated for minor injuries at Kent General Hospital. Shinsky was uninjured.
U.S. 13 south was closed for 90 minutes, Oldham said.
