A double trailer fire at the Bolton Trailer Park in Uniontown, Alabama early Wednesday morning took the lives of a pregnant woman and four children.
Viola Fikes, 24, and her four children, Emanuel Lane, eight, WyQuise Fikes, six, Shakemia Ward, four and Sekira Fikes, one, were the victims of the fire. The mother was also four to five months pregnant, according to Acting State Fire Marshal Richard Montgomery.
"Ms. Fikes sister had tried to go in to the fire, but was unsuccessful at saving any of the family members," Montgomery said.
"I have not investigated in this part of the state before, but whenever a family and especially children are involved in a fire it is especially a sad case," he said.
Montgomery said the Uniontown Volunteer Fire Department and Uniontown Police Department were initially called in at 1:10 a.m. It was at 1:30 a.m. that the fire department contacted the Alabama State Fire Marshal's Office to investigate.
The deputy responding from the State Fire Marshal's Office was responding from approximately 60 miles away in Montgomery.
Although the investigation is still in progress, the Alabama State Fire Marshal's Office is examining lighting sources and possibly a cigarette as a probable cause for the fire. There was no electrical power being used inside the trailer for it was disconnected.
