Arizona Firefighters Battle Blaze At Recycling Center

April 30, 2004
A lack of fire hydrants in the area complicated Tucson firefighters efforts to douse a blaze at a recycled paper plant.
The fire burned approximately one to one and a-half acres of paper.

The winds initially hindered firefighters' efforts to get close to the four to 12-foot-high stacks of burning material.

Firefighters also set up a shuttle of water tenders to feed firefighting equipment.

A lack of fire hydrants in the area also forced crews to use a crash rescue truck.

It was used to pump a foam-and-water mixture on the blaze.

Officials say the fire appeared under control while firefighters worked to keep the other three sides contained.
