Simulating A New Jersey Hazmat Mishap Is Just The Training They Need
Dressed in special suits designed to protect them from harm and hooked up to portable oxygen tanks, 27 emergency responders tackled a simulated spill yesterday at a Carteret chemical terminal.
Mindful that surrounding them were giant tanks holding a variety of hazardous chemicals, the crews plugged an old tanker that was supposed to be leaking benzene and fixed a ruptured pipe gushing what was supposed to be sulfuric acid.
For some of the responders, the simulation, held at the Kinder Morgan Liquids Terminal in Carteret, was a refresher, but most of the participants were learning about how to handle a crisis for the first time.
