BETHLEHEM -- A hit-and-run driver desperate to escape arrest Monday night fought with two officers as they struggled to rescue him from a burning vehicle, police said.

Dennis Sandt Jr., 33, was speeding away from a crash site in Allentown when he rear-ended a car at West Broad and Market streets about 6 p.m. and ricocheted into a pole near the road, a police report says.

Police arrived just as flames burst from under the hood of Sandt's 1991 Dodge Shadow, the report says.
