A two-alarm blaze that last night threatened residents in a five-story building with more than 40 apartments at Varick and Monmouth streets was brought under control by Jersey City firefighters, Fire Capt. Andrew Johnson said.

Responding to a 7:06 p.m. alarm, firefighters found flames blowing from the three windows of an apartment on the second floor, Johnson said. A second alarm was called immediately because of the danger that the fire would spread to other apartments and because flames were blowing out the windows and across the fire escapes, cutting off a potential means of escape, said Johnson.
