The Houston firefighters union says they won a major victory Wednesday when the city council decided the fire department must stick with four firefighters to each truck, no matter what it means for the budget.

On Wednesday, council members voted against allowing HFD crews to send two trucks manned with three firefighters each to fire calls. Fire Chief Chris Connealy came up with this plan, saying the city would save about $6 million by not having four firefighters on each truck.

"There's no way to cut within the fire department," said Chief Connealy. "Now if there's savings, they can generate from other areas of the city, through the budget process. That may be a mechanism. We'll just have to wait and see what happens through this budget process."

"Their true feelings were expressed and that was about public safety and firefighter safety and based on their actions, we applaud them," said Fire Union President Steve Williams.

The fire union had argued that the new task force plan put the public and fire crews at risk. Chief Connealy denied those claims
