Virginia Firefighter/EMTs Recover From Crash,Tractor-trailer Driver Charged

Two firefighters injured when their Ambulance was struck by a tractor-trailer on Monday,March 17, are improving.
Two firefighters injured when their Ambulance was struck by a tractor-trailer on Monday,March 17, are improving.

"Both had injuries that were non-life threatening,"said Henrico Fire Chief Ronald Mastin." One firefighter sustained minor lacerations,bruises and contusions.The other firefighter received a minor concussion,bruises,contusions and slightly more severe lacerations.He received over 30 stitches. Both were treated and released from Medical College of Virginia Hospital on the same day."

"The driver of the tractor-trailer,Robert Grdgon,42 of Durham,N.C. has been charged with failing to yield right of way,"Command Sgt.Tom Shumate of Henrico Police said.

The accident occurred as Rescue Unit 6,with lights on,was responding to a medical call.A tractor-trailer headed west on I-64 rounded an off ramp,then while attempting to turn left to go South on

Laburnum Ave,struck the rescue vehicle which was headed North.The rescue vehicle was sent onto the median by impact,then struck a curb in front of a gasoline station,flipping onto it's roof.A fire truck that was behind the ambulance was able to render immediate aid."

"The vehicle is being evaluated,but is most likely a total loss,"Chief Mastin said."They(firefighters) were very fortunate.One may even be back to work Friday." The accident is still under investigation.
