Feb. 08--Suffolk police are investigating a traffic stop they said was made by an employee of Portsmouth Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services in an unmarked city car.

A Suffolk patrol officer saw what appeared to be a traffic stop at 4:33 p.m. Jan. 24 at the intersection of Pinner Street and Finney Avenue, said Debbie George, a spokeswoman for Suffolk police. The vehicle that made the stop had blue lights flashing, she said.

The police officer determined that the man driving the Portsmouth vehicle was a firefighter, she said. Police notified the Portsmouth fire department and continue to investigate.

"I believe they are going to be conferring with our commonwealth's attorney's office," George said.

Virginia law makes it a misdemeanor to impersonate a police officer.
