March 05--One person died in an early morning fire at a Lower Township apartment building, police said.
Det. Ernest Macomber said the call for a fire at the Channels Apartments on Bayshore Drive, came in about 12:45 a.m. Three companies responded to the blaze, which was contained entirely in a ground floor apartment.
The scene outside the apartment complex by 7:30 a.m. was quiet, with a patio door boarded up and a charred sofa sitting on the grass next to the unit that had been on fire.
Macomber said three families in the complex had been relocated overnight by the Red Cross because of smoke damage, but no other unit suffered any fire or structural damage.
Lower Township police and the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office both are investigating. More information, including the identity of the deceased, will be released today, Macomber said.
