TEMPERANCE, Ohio --Four volunteer firefighters and the driver of a car were injured Wednesday when the car collided with a Bedford Township rescue squad on Lewis Avenue near Smith Road, authorities said.

Bruce E. Wyllis, 63, of Maybee, Mich., was transported to Toledo Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

The four volunteer firefighters -- three men and a woman -- were treated for minor injuries at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center and Toledo Hospital, deputies said. Mr. Wyllis' westbound car stopped at Hickory Creek Boulevard, pulled into the intersection about 12:30 p.m. to continue across Lewis, and was struck by the southbound rescue truck.

Authorities said the fire vehicle was responding to a shed fire in the 6900 block of Lewis and did not have sirens and lights activated. Deputies said that alcohol might have contributed to the accident.
