INDEPENDENCE - Independence firefighters rescued a 3-year-old who was trapped inside her burning home after neighbors kicked in her bedroom window but couldn't get to her because of smoke.
KCTV reports a mother woke up around 7:30 a.m. Monday to a smoke alarm going off in the upstairs part of the house. She was able to get two children, ages 4 and 23 months, out of the home but couldn't get the 3-year-old from her back bedroom.
Fire crews entered the home with a thermal imaging camera and found the child. Battalion Chief Chuck Perry says the family's instructions made it easier for firefighters to locate her amid the smoke.
The girl suffered from smoke inhalation, as did her mother who also sustained carbon monoxide poisoning. Both were expected to recover.
