April 09--CHARLESTON -- Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has ordered all State flags displayed at the State Capitol Complex and on all State facilities throughout Logan County be lowered to half-staff from dawn to dusk today in honor of Lake Volunteer Fire Department Chief George Underwood, who died while responding to a public assistance call on April 3, 2014.
"Chief Underwood dedicated his life to helping others-in his role as fire chief and as a member of the Lake community," Gov. Tomblin said. "Joanne and I send our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to his wife, children, family and friends."
An Eagle Scout, Underwood served the citizens of the Lake community as Chief of the Lake Volunteer Fire Department for more than 25 years, and in this position trained and mentored the firefighters who served the community. Underwood also served for many years as an Auxiliary Deputy for the Logan County Sheriff's office.
Services for Underwood will be held at 2 p.m. today at Victory Freewill Baptist Church at Mill Creek with Rev. Roscoe Chafin officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens at Godby.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Ball Underwood; his sons, George Scott Underwood and Ronnie Allen Ball; his daughters, Angie Spears and Cindy Smith; his brother, Joe Mileto; his sisters, Betty Torres, Sherrie Hall, Linda Hall, Donna Hall and Frankie Williams; 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
