109 Fire Departments and Organizations to Receive Over $8 Million in First Responder Funds.

WASHINGTON, DC - Michael D. Brown, Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response, announced 109 Fire Prevention and Safety grants totaling $8,739,451 that are part of the Assistance to Firefighter Grant program (AFG). These grants are for the FY2003 program.

The Fire Prevention and Safety aspect of the AFG program reserves the highest priority for projects focusing on the prevention of fire-related injuries to children. Many of these awards represent innovative solutions for the delivery of fire prevention activities throughout the United States.

The Fire Prevention and Safety program is the non-competitive portion of the Assistance to Firefighters program. The grants are made available to fire departments and other organizations, especially national, state, local, and community organizations that are recognized specifically for their experience and expertise in fire prevention or safety programs and activities.

DHS is also announcing the competitive, direct to fire department grants for FY2004 in other releases.

On March 1, 2003, the Office for Domestic Preparedness became a part of the Department of Homeland Security. ODP administers a number of programs that provide a wide array of support to our nation
