Ken Willette has devoted his professional life to improving the fire service via leadership, education and training for over 40 years. The North American Fire Training Directors (NAFTD) Award for Excellence in Fire Training Leadership is currently given in recognition of this dedication. 

The award, which is supported by Vector Solutions and its Acadis Readiness Suite, honors people who have shown remarkable and consistent leadership in improving fire service education and training and whose contributions have had a major and long-lasting influence on firefighter professional development and readiness.

Willette, the award's first recipient, says he is humbled by the honor and sees it as a testament to the numerous individuals he has collaborated with over the course of his career.

“While I may be selected, I'd like to think that it's a representation of those people I was blessed to work with,” Willette said. “I accept this award on behalf of them and in recognition of the work they did as well.”

Willette has been active in fire service training since the early 1980s, contributing at the departmental, state, national and international levels. His dedication throughout his career has centered on a straightforward yet impactful mission: enhancing the skills firefighters require to safeguard both civilian and firefighter lives.

“Real people, real training, saving real lives,” Willette said. “The people being trained today might be fighting a fire in someone's home the next week. They took that personally.”

His philosophy on training leadership focuses on listening, fostering trust, encouraging innovation and committing to addressing not just present challenges but also preparing for future ones.

“Ken has dedicated his career to making the fire service better through training, education, and the relationships he has built along the way,” said John Cunningham, executive director of NAFTD. “His willingness to share his experience, mentor others, and bring people together has left a lasting mark on our profession. I can think of no one more deserving of this recognition.”

For Willette, this recognition signifies not just a remarkable career but also the collaborative efforts of training leaders and professionals dedicated to equipping firefighters with the necessary knowledge, skills and preparation crucial when lives are at stake.

“An effective leader in fire service training is somebody who listens,” he said. “Somebody who is visionary and doesn't raise their eyes only to where they are, but beyond the horizon as to what is next.”
