IN Firefighter Dies after Annual Fitness Test

Lawrence firefighter Jeffrey Holt suffered a cardiac episode at a station and died Monday following his annual physical assessment training.

A veteran firefighter in a suburban community just outside Indianapolis has died following his annual physical fitness exam.

Lawrence Fire Department Chief Dino Batalis announced that firefighter Jeffrey Holt, 60, died Monday after suffering a likely cardiac episode at Station 38 around 10 a.m. following his annual physical assessment training.

Despite all life-saving efforts by medics and firefighters at the scene, and after transport to Indiana Heart Hospital, Holt passed away.

Chief Batalis said Holt's passing marks the first line-of-duty death for the Lawrence Fire Department.

Holt joined the department full time in 1996, and during his long career he served as an engineer, lieutenant, division chief of training and deputy chief of operations, according to a department Facebook post. Holt was currently assigned to the engine company at Station 36 and was anticipating his retirement.

"Firefighter Holt was well-respected by his fellow firefighters and EMS personnel," the Facebook post reads. "His family and friends are in the thoughts and prayers of his brothers and sisters on the City of Lawrence Fire Department, along with his extended public safety family."
