A North Carolina volunteer firefighter has died after a yearslong battle with injuries from a car crash while returning from a 2007 arson call, his department announced Tuesday.
Catawba firefighter Derek Poole was headed back to the station at around 12:30 a.m. March 25, 2007 when the accident happened. Poole collided with another vehicle at an intersection, and he was ejected from his car.
Along with being a member of the Catawba Fire Department, Poole also served with the West Iredell Volunteer Fire Department.
"Derek Poole was a young man that was determined to be involved in the fire department joining and participating in two departments at the same time," the West Iredell department stated in a social media post.
