A veteran firefighter and Air National Guardsman died of complications from COVID-19 after contracting the deadly virus while on duty.

The Kansas City, KS, Professional Firefighters Association announced in a social media post that Assistant Chief of Operations Michael L. Baker, 52, with the Forbes Field Fire Department died on Sept. 21. The Forbes Field Air Base is located in Topeka west of Kansas City.

According to the post, Chief Baker was with the Forbes Field FD for 14 years and served honorably with the Kansas Air National Guard.

"Brother Baker leaves behind a wife and 3 adult children," the KCK Firefighters Association said. "Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
