The Mabank fire chief was struck while directing traffic Saturday night and later died at the hospital.
Charlie Woodard, 38, was directing traffic at the Mabank Rodeo Grounds when he stepped into the westbound lane of U.S. Highway 175 and was struck by a passing pickup truck, the Texas Department of Public Safety told NBCDFW.com.
Woodard was transported to UT Health in Gun Barrel City, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to the Mabank Police Department.
The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.
The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. during the 71st annual Mabank Rodeo week.
Woodard had been involved in the fire service for 20 years, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.
