ROSENDALE, N.Y. — The chief of the Cottekill Fire Department died in the line of duty on Friday after he was struck by a fallen tree being removed from a road, according to a fire department news release.

The department said it was removing a tree from a roadway at approximately 3:06 p.m. Friday, July 3, when Chief David A. Gagnon was struck by a portion of the tree when it unexpectedly snapped.

The release said Cottekill firefighters, with the assistance of the Bloomington Fire District, Marbletown First Aid, and Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and Rosendale Police Department personnel, immediately began life-saving measures. Despite these efforts, Gagnon died of his injuries.

“Chief Gagnon faithfully served the Cottekill Fire District and his community with dedication, leadership and commitment,” the department said in a release. “His passing is a profound loss to his family, fellow firefighters and the community.”

“The Cottekill Fire District extends its deepest condolences to the Gagnon family during this difficult time,” the release said.

The release did not say on what road the accident took place.

Condolences from police, fire and EMS agencies across Ulster County were posted on social media.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office said, “The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office extends our condolences to the Cottekill Volunteer Fire Company and the family of Chief David A. Gagnon during this incredibly difficult time. Chief Gagnon dedicated his life to serving others which was easily demonstrated through his exemplary service over many years.
