North Royalton, OH, Firefighter Killed in House Fire Identified

North Royalton Firefighter/Paramedic Ryan Milligan died after becoming trapped in a basement at a Broadview Heights house fire.

The North Royalton firefighter who died after being trapped in a basement while battling a house fire Monday night was identified, along with a firefighter who was seriously injured.

Firefighter/Paramedic Ryan Milligan, 36, responded around 8:30 p.m. to a house fire in Broadview Heights.

Milligan, who lived in Seven Hills, joined the department 10 years ago and was in the process of preparing for the department's promotional exam for lieutenant.

Mayor Paul F. Marnecheck II said Firefighter/Paramedic Andrew Protsman suffered serious injuries but is expected to recover.

Protsman, 38, is a veteran who served with the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

"Anyone who knows a firefighter, knows they belong to a kindred brotherhood. They are not merely coworkers, they are family, living and working together to serve our residents. Milligan and Protsman were doing just that, alongside their brothers, while battling a house fire in Broadview Heights last night, as part of mutual aid," Marnecheck said in a statement.

Milligan leaves behind a wife and two children.

A GoFundMe was established to help Milligan's family and raised nearly $134,000 by late Tuesday.

"Each time our firefighters, and police officers, set foot in the station, their day is uncertain, and we know this all too well and are indebted to the sacrifices they make each day on our behalf, Marnecheck shared. "I ask our community to join me in keeping our firefighters, and their families in our hearts and prayers."
