TX Firefighter Dies of Occupational Cancer

Sept. 26, 2022
Firefighter David Greene, 56, had been with the Fort Worth Fire Department since 1993.

Fort Worth firefighters will offer a colleague a final salute Wednesday.

Engineer David Greene, 56, died Sept. 19 of occupational brain cancer.

Lt. David Childs told NBCDFW Greene was well-liked.  "He's somebody who would talk with anybody and he didn't know an enemy...David was known as the car guy, mechanic guy, that liked to tell stories."

They both worked together at Station 39 on the city's southwest side.

One day in January, the lieutenant noticed Greene getting confused, mixing up words and even taking the wrong turn to calls. "Suddenly he just didn't get it."

A brain scan told what was going on. "...It came back that he had a mass in his left frontal lobe and it just blew my mind,” Childs said.

Greene fought, just as he had while he was on the line. Despite chemotherapy and surgery, the mass kept growing. But, in June, he found out there was nothing else to do.

A memorial service will be Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. at Doxology Bible Church, 4805 Arborlawn Dr, Fort Worth, TX 76109. It is open to the public, there will not be a separate visitation.

The family asks that donations be made to St Jude Children's Research Hospital or Lone Star Bulldog Club Rescue.
