Two firefighters were killed when an airplane struck their fire apparatus on the runway at Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima Friday.
Officials say the fire vehicle was responding to an emergency when it was struck by an Airbus 320 airplane operated by LATAM Airlines.
Fire Department General Commander Luis Ponce said one firefighter was also injured in the collision, according to ABC7Chicago.com.
Video captured the fire apparatus driving when the airplane crashes into the vehicle and a fire erupts.
Nobody on the plane was injured, according to airline officials.
Authorities from the airport and airlines are working to determine why the collision happened.
"It was a flight that was in optimal conditions to take off, it had authorization to take off and it encountered a truck on the runway and we don't know what the truck was doing there," LATAM General Manager Manuel van Oordt said. "We have to investigate and establish why it was there."
The airport was closed until Saturday as officials worked on the investigation and to clean up the debris.
