DeKalb County, GA, Firefighter Dies During Warehouse Fire

A fire at a Lithonia warehouse under renovation claimed the life of a veteran DeKalb County firefighter.

A warehouse fire in Lithonia Monday claimed the life of a veteran DeKalb County firefighter.

The department said the firefighter who died, a 21-year veteran of the department, was seriously injured and died at Grady Memorial Hospital, according to 11Alive.com.

"DeKalb County Fire Rescue mourns the loss of a beloved veteran of our department, who passed away after dedicating 21 years of service. He succumbed to injuries sustained in a commercial structure fire," the department said in a statement. 

Multiple fire companies responded to the fire at 2517 South Stone Mountain Lithonia Road early Monday afternoon.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that firefighters lined up outside the hospital Monday evening for a procession.

The member has not been identified.

Fire officials have not said what lead to the firefighter's death, or what caused the fire.
