Firehouse presents recent fires from around the country.

Vernon, CT, Sept. 24, 2018—Crews were toned out for numerous calls reporting a building fire on Hartford Turnpike. Companies arrived to find heavy fire through the roof in the rear of the café, which was located in the middle of a strip mall. The fire quickly moved to the front of the building, but crews were able to contain the fire to the store of origin.

Webster, MA, Sept. 6, 2018—Around 4:30 p.m., the Webster Fire Department received calls for a lightning strike to a building with smoke showing. Arriving units confirmed a working fire that quickly escalated to a third alarm due to building construction and along with heat and humidity. Collapses of the chimney and roof prompted a defensive operation. Three firefighters were taken to the hospital—one for falling through a staircase and two for dehydration. Multiple mutual aid departments responded to assist Webster.

Red Oak, NC, Sept. 9, 2018—Crews were dispatched to a large building fire in the Dortches section of Red Oak. Upon arrival, the chief reported having a large commercial building heavily involved in fire and made a special call for additional departments to be dispatched. Crews stretched two 2½-inch hoselines to begin attacking the fire and three sections of 5-inch hose to secure a water supply. Later-arriving departments stretched additional hoselines.
